Patio doors

A patio door slides on a track, so it takes no floor space to open and gives you the widest possible glass area for the opening. The track and rollers are the parts that decide how it feels in year eight, so they are the parts we specify hardest — a cheap roller set is the single most common reason a patio door becomes unpleasant to use.

Where it is the right answer

  • Deck and yard access
  • Rooms where a swinging door would hit furniture
  • Wide openings where glass area matters

What you give up

  • The track collects grit and needs occasional cleaning
  • Seals less tightly than a hinged garden door

Every type trades something. A page that lists only strengths is a brochure, not advice.

Specification

How it is built.

Locking system

On an entry door the lock does two jobs: security, and pulling the slab tight against the weatherstrip. Multi-point hardware does the second job considerably better than a single deadbolt.

  • Multi-point locking available, engaging the frame at the top, middle and bottom
  • Standard deadbolt and handleset options
  • Hardware rated for cold-weather operation — stiffening is the usual failure, not breakage
  • Smart lock compatible where you want it

Slab and core

Both materials we fit have insulated cores. The difference is what happens to the outside face over time.

  • Fibreglass: will not warp, dent or rust, holds paint and stain, highest insulating value of the options we fit
  • Steel: strongest against forced entry and lowest cost, but a dent is permanent and a scratch through the finish will eventually rust
  • Insulated core in both
  • We do not fit wood exterior doors — in this climate they need refinishing on a schedule most people do not keep

Door glass

Glass inserts are where most of the visual decision happens, and where most of the heat leaves if the insert is poorly specified.

  • Double or triple-glazed inserts with Low-E and argon
  • Clear, obscure and decorative options
  • Sidelights and transoms as part of the same assembly
  • Internal blinds available between the panes on patio and garden doors

Frame, threshold and weatherstrip

These three parts are what actually fail on a door in Edmonton. Everything else outlasts them.

  • Adjustable threshold, so the seal can be reset as the house settles
  • Compression weatherstrip, replaceable rather than integral
  • Jamb depth measured to your wall assembly
  • Brickmould exterior trim, shedding water away from the frame joint
  • Composite or reinforced sill, which does not rot at the point water sits

Colours and finish

Doors take colour better than windows do, and the front door is usually where a house is allowed some personality.

  • Factory-finished paint in a range of colours
  • Woodgrain finishes on fibreglass, stainable to match interior trim
  • Different interior and exterior colour on the same door
  • Hardware finishes including black, bronze, satin nickel and brass
