Questions
Straight answers, including the awkward ones.
If a question is not here, call and ask. We would rather answer it once properly than have you guess.
Cost and quoting
What does window replacement cost in Edmonton?
It depends on opening size, style, glazing, install type, access and finish, and those vary enough between houses that a published range would be wrong for most people who read it. Call us or book a free estimate and we will measure and give you a real number in writing.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. We measure, we quote in writing, and there is no charge and no obligation whether you go ahead or not.
Why is there no price list on your website?
Because a figure on a web page is a guess about your house, and we would rather measure than have you plan around a number we invented. What we do publish is the exclusions — what a quote does not cover — which is the part that actually causes the surprises.
What is not included in the quote?
Rot or structural repair found once the old unit is out, interior finishing beyond the opening, permits where an opening is enlarged, and disposal beyond the units we remove. Your written quote lists the specific ones that apply.
Product and performance
Is triple-pane worth it in Edmonton?
For most Edmonton homes, yes — it runs −25 to −35 °C for weeks at a time, and triple-pane is also what CEIP financing requires here. We fit both, so it is your call: on a sheltered elevation or a tighter budget, double-pane is a sound choice and we will say so.
What does ENERGY STAR actually require?
A U-factor no higher than 0.21 and an Energy Rating of at least 34. Canada dropped its regional climate zones in January 2020, so one national standard now applies coast to coast.
How much heat do windows and doors actually lose?
Up to 25% of a home’s total heat loss. In a heating-dominated climate that converts directly into utility cost, which is why the envelope matters more here than in milder provinces.
Do you fit wood exterior doors?
No. In this climate they need refinishing on a schedule most people do not keep, and we would rather decline than sell you something that looks poor in four years.
Timing and installation
Can windows be installed in winter?
Yes, down to about −20 °C. We use cold-weather foams and sealants, work one opening at a time, contain the work to a single room, and leave old units in place overnight on multi-day jobs. Vinyl does get more brittle in deep cold, which slows cutting.
Is winter a cheaper time to do it?
Usually. Demand is lower between December and February, so scheduling is more flexible and lead times are shorter.
How long does a whole-home job take?
One to three days for most homes. Product lead time before that varies by manufacturer and season, and we give you the current figure at quote stage.
Will my house be open overnight?
No. We work one opening at a time and close the house up every night, including on multi-day jobs.
Permits and code
Do I need a permit to replace a window?
Not for a like-for-like replacement in an existing opening. You do need a City of Edmonton building permit if the opening is being enlarged or the foundation cut.
What size does a basement bedroom window have to be?
At least 0.35 m² of clear opening with no dimension under 380 mm, openable from inside without tools and able to stay open unsupported. This is the National Building Code (Alberta Edition) requirement for egress.
My window faces the side property line. Does that change anything?
Yes. Window changes facing a side property line require elevation drawings and may require a development permit as well. It is a planning requirement rather than a building one, so it catches people out late.
Rebates and financing
Can I still get the Canada Greener Homes Grant?
No. The grant closed to new applications in February 2024 and the loan closed in October 2025. Any company still advertising them is advertising something you cannot join.
What financing is actually available in Edmonton?
The Clean Energy Improvement Program, which is City of Edmonton financing repaid through your property tax bill at 6.00% fixed for up to 20 years, and dealer financing through us. CEIP is currently nearing capacity with new pre-qualifications waitlisted.
Does CEIP transfer if I sell the house?
Yes. The balance and the improvement both pass to the new owner, because the financing is attached to the property rather than to you.
Working with us
Will you service a window you did not install?
Yes. Most companies in this trade will not, which is why people end up replacing a window that needed a small part.
Do you door-knock?
No, never. We do not cold-call either. If someone claiming to be from Helovs turns up uninvited, they are not from Helovs.
Can I cancel after I sign?
Yes. Alberta law gives you 10 days to cancel a prepaid contract after you receive your copy, for any reason and with no penalty. We print that on the quote.
Do you make your own windows?
No. We are a dealer, and we install product from two manufacturers. That means we can tell you when a cheaper line is the right answer for a given opening.
